I have always found HBO's content to be either incredibly well produced or horribly stupid. Bad Education is a smart film, but is carried solely by the cast. The plot does shed light into the current state of the public school system in America but without Hugh Jackman, Ray Romano, and Allison Janney, this film would have fallen on its face. It is dry material elevated to entertainment with educational value and enough social commentary to make anyone question the current state of education in America.

Bad education netflix. Bad education parents evening. Bad education s01e02. This movie starts with a real head of steam. It's stylish, sharp, fast paced, and stuffed with great performances. I wasn't sure how it could maintain the energy of the first 40 minutes and, unfortunately, it doesn't. Mostly the film focuses on the school board admins who are covering up some serious wrong doings. Which is the good stuff. Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney are superb. Hugh Jackman is specifically great as the superintendent. The film starts by establishing him as the perfect school advisor. He's present, super caring, knows all the students by name, and even knows their parents hobbies. Then the film rips the floor out from underneath you and all the characters they set up. It really works and is highly engaging. You pair this great character work with a tight structure and you get some magic scenes. Again, this is mostly in the first half of the film. Around the halfway mark is when the film starts to shift focus more to a student writing about the cover up and the subsequent fallout. That's when this starts to tread into very familiar waters. I can't count how many movies I've seen where a reporter peers over papers that aren't matching up and gets confused. It doesn't take up a ton of screen time unlike most movies about reporters and the structure is better here too. Still, it hurts the pacing and the character of this student isn't all that interesting. In short, it's a tail of two halves. The first half is wonderful and the second is just okay. Some things are consistent though like the amazing music, mannered cinematography, and some inspired editing/transitions. From a filmmaking perspective it's really top notch. I think if the script went through at least one more draft and maybe the editor went over it again we'd have a really special movie. As is, it's still pretty great. Watch out for Cory Finley. He's got two bangers in a row now.
